Wes Mayhew’s Retirement – March 2026

By admin | Published: July 8, 2011
Celebrating Wes: A Legacy of Service, Leadership, and Heart
After 12 years of dedicated service to Behavioral Systems Southwest (BSS), Assistant Program Director Wes concludes an extraordinary chapter—one defined by wisdom, compassion, and a quiet strength that shaped both people and programs. His retirement marks the close of an era, and the BSS community joins together to honor a professional journey that spans nearly four decades of public service.
Before joining BSS, Wes built an impressive career with the Federal Bureau of Prisons, serving more than 25 years with unwavering commitment to public safety, integrity, and rehabilitation. When he arrived at BSS after retiring from the BOP, he brought with him a depth of experience that would quickly become a cornerstone of the program’s success. But what truly set Wes apart was not just his knowledge—it was who he was as a person.
Over his 12 years as Assistant Program Director, Wes became known as the steady center of the team. He had the rare ability to strike the perfect balance between professionalism and humanity. Staff often remarked on how he could be both the voice of reason and the source of laughter, effortlessly creating an environment where people felt supported, motivated, and valued. His understanding of human behavior—born from decades of experience—made him a trusted guide for staff and residents alike.
Wes’s work ethic was unmatched. He showed up every day with purpose, humility, and a willingness to do whatever the moment required. Whether navigating complex program needs, offering thoughtful feedback, or simply lending an ear, he approached every task with integrity and care. His leadership style was never loud, never boastful; instead, it was rooted in consistency, fairness, and genuine respect for others.
Colleagues describe Wes as someone who made work lighter even when it was hard. His humor brought relief on long days, his insight brought clarity in difficult situations, and his presence brought a sense of calm that will be deeply missed. For many staff, Wes was more than an Assistant Program Director—he was a mentor, a role model, and a friend.
As BSS reflects on his contributions, one thing becomes abundantly clear: Wes leaves behind far more than professional accomplishments. He leaves a legacy. A legacy of compassion woven into every interaction. A legacy of stability built into the fabric of the program. A legacy of humanity that will continue to influence the way BSS serves its community.
Retirement marks a new beginning for Wes—a well‑earned chapter after decades of service dedicated to helping others rebuild, restart, and rise. Though his daily presence will be missed, the lessons he taught and the culture he nurtured will remain deeply embedded in the heart of BSS.
We wish Wes joy, rest, and fulfillment in the years ahead—and we thank him for the remarkable journey he shared with us. His impact will endure long after his final day, carried forward by the many lives he touched along the way.
